BLOW AWAY YOUR TROUBLES

CATEGORY

        Meditation Game

DESCRIPTION

        Blow soap bubbles in a meditative way.

INSTRUCTIONS

        Stand up straight and take some slow deep breaths. Mentally, make a list of things that concern you. Open your jar of soap bubble solution, take out the wand, and gently blow one large bubble or a string of bubbles. As you blow, put one worry or concern in each bubble or string of bubbles. Imagine the bubbles as messengers to God or the Universe - your playful request for assistance or forgiveness. Rather than dwelling on the specifics of the problem or dilemma, focus your attention neutrally on the bubbles. Watch the bubbles float on the air, gradually breaking or landing. Notice how they are both colorful and light. As you watch the bubbles, remember that problems are heavy because of the weight we give them, most often the weight of fear that we won't successfully manage them. After blowing away all your cares and concerns, pause a moment or two and take some deep cleansing breaths. Now, start blowing words of gratitude and appreciation.

JOY'S JOURNEY

        Wish as hard as you might, you will never have a life without problems. The best you can hope for is a more compassionate view of your problems, and some assistance with solving the ones that come your way. You can wish for a different set of problems, but be careful what you wish (see ABSENT AGONIES).

        According to M. Scott Peck, problems are really gifts in disguise. He says, "Problems bring out our courage and our wisdom; indeed, they create our courage and our wisdom. It is only because of our problems that we grow personally."

        This activity is a lot of fun for groups that find they get mired in the muck of solving serious problems, such as social service groups or AA meetings. It makes a great closing for therapy sessions, giving clients a chance to concretely state their worries (silently or out loud), yet ending the session on a positive note of gratitude.

QUOTES

The child's philosophy is a true one.
He does not despise the bubble because it burst;
and he immediately sets to work to blow another one.
