CATEGORY Meditation Game DESCRIPTION Play hopscotch with a spiritual twist. INSTRUCTIONS This game can be played indoors or outdoors. Indoors, use masking tape to draw the hopscotch grid. Outdoors, use chalk or watercolor paint. Make your own markers by painting words on stones or bean bags. Label the squares conventionally using numbers, or label them with words that represent the qualities you want to appear in your life. For example, abundance or kindness. There's a list of possibilities in the SYMBOLISM section.
Basic Hopscotch Instructions: Toss a marker onto the first square. On one foot, hop over the first square to the second square. Hop on the same foot to the third square, then land with your left foot in the fourth square and your right foot in the fifth, so that you're standing on both feet now. Hop to square six, landing on one foot again. Finally, hop and land on both feet, your left foot in the seventh square, and your right foot in the eighth. To turn around and head back, jump upward and spin 180 degrees, so that you land with your left foot in the eighth square, and your right foot in the seventh square. Alternate from one to both feet on the return trip. When you return to the second square, bend down while still balancing on one foot. Pick up the marker you left in square one. Straighten up and hop into square one then out. Now, toss the same or a different marker into the second square. If it lands in square 2 without touching the lines, go through the above jumping sequence, this time skipping square two. If the marker doesn't land in the designated square or you hop on a line, or have to put your other foot down for balance, you get to start over again. Focus on the word you "missed" as you start over. RELATED IDEA Do a different yoga posture in each square, choosing one-footed postures for squares 1,2,3 and 6, and two-footed postures for 4/5 and 7/8. JOY'S JOURNEY I was a late bloomer as far as athletic coordination. I can play hopscotch much better now then when I was a child. Doing this activity successfully in the present heals the residual pain I felt from the lack of coordination I experienced during my childhood.
