OH PUN YOUR MIND! CATEGORY Writing Exercise DESCRIPTION Play with your words. INSTRUCTIONS Create a playful literary work of art. There are many fun ways to play with words. Most puns are the result of using homophones -- words that sound the same, but have different meanings and/or spellings (aisle, I'll, isle). Acronyms are pronounceable abbreviations, formed using the first letters of a descriptive phrase (ASAP = as soon as possible). A mnemonic is a saying or rhyme, used as a memory aid (most people prefer one desert and two desserts). An antagonym is a word that has more than one meaning, two of which are opposite (BUCKLE meaning "to hold together" as in "buckle your belt" and BUCKLE meaning "to fall apart" as in "buckle under pressure"). Anagrams are the rearrangement of the letters in a word or the words in a phrase to form another word or phrase (dormitory = dirty room). Come up with your own collective noun, like my "twinkle of stars" or "giggle of clowns." See how many different ways you can say the same thing (synonyms). Write an essay, only using clichés (overused expressions like "jump for joy".) JOY'S JOURNEY Here are the anagrams from the phrase "Ice Cream for the Soul":
